Antalya Airport Car Rental Guide

Antalya Airport (AYT) is the main door for most holiday arrivals on this stretch of the Turkish Mediterranean. In high summer, wide-body aircraft land in clusters; in winter the pace eases and golf guests and longer-stay visitors share the terminal with domestic traffic. Collecting a hire car after baggage claim is a practical choice if you are heading to Lara, Kundu, Belek, Side, Kemer or Alanya with suitcases, golf bags or a family that does not want to wait for a shared shuttle. This guide stays on the process: terminals, meet and greet, delayed flights, night landings and how to hand the car back without a last-minute scramble.

AYT has separate international and domestic terminal buildings. Most leisure flights from Europe use the international side. The common first mistake is walking toward the wrong kerb while looking for a rental desk that is actually outside or in a dedicated parking zone. Save the meeting instruction from your booking confirmation as a screenshot before you lose signal. At handover you should expect to show a passport, a valid driving licence and a credit card in the main driver's name. The typical minimum age is 21; some higher groups ask for more years on the licence or a higher age. None of this is unique to one company—it is how airport rentals in Turkey usually work.

Meet and greet after a long inbound flight

Meet and greet means a staff member waits with a name board near the arrivals exit and walks you to the vehicle or the office. In July and August that is often kinder than decoding parking signs while children melt in the heat. If you added your flight number to the reservation, the team can shift the meeting time when the inbound aircraft is late. Still allow time for immigration and bags: a delayed belt is not visible on a flight tracker. When several charters land together, the hall fills. A short message once you are through passport control keeps the greeter from standing at the wrong door.

The contract, the existing-damage sheet and the fuel reading should be reviewed together, not signed in a blur. Walk around the car in daylight or under the car-park lamps. Photograph bumpers, alloys, glass and the roof. Start the engine and feel the air-conditioning: summer cabin heat at AYT is not a rumour, and a weak blower is better discovered before you join the D400 coastal road. Automatic cars are the default request for many visitors who are tired, unused to a manual gearbox on the right-hand traffic pattern, or simply carrying a full load toward Belek or Side.

What happens when the aircraft is late?

Delays happen. Thunderstorms inland, slot restrictions or a late departure from the origin airport can move an AYT arrival by an hour or more. Sharing the flight number helps, but it is not a substitute for a message when you know you will miss the original window. After midnight, shifts change. A note sent from the aircraft or the transfer desk is more reliable than assuming someone will wait indefinitely. If you are rebooked onto a different flight number, send the new one. A greeter standing under the old arrival board will not find you.

Night arrivals: the first drive is the risky one

Plenty of European services touch down late or in the small hours. Fatigue plus unfamiliar signs is how people miss the Lara exit or join the wrong lane toward the east. You do not have to drive to Alanya the same night. Lara hotels are typically about 15–25 minutes from AYT in normal traffic; Kundu is often 20–30 minutes; Belek 35–50; Side 60–80; Kemer 45–70 depending on the mountain and coastal sections; Alanya is commonly around two hours, longer with stops or roadworks. Treat those figures as typical ranges, not a timetable. Night roadworks on the D400 are common in the building months before the next season.

If you do drive in the dark, check lights, washer fluid and tyre condition at the bay. The D400 is the spine between the airport and most resort belts. Even at night you will share it with coaches and trucks. Speed cameras and sudden lane changes punish hesitation. Note the fuel level on the checkout sheet so you are not hunting a closed station at 02:00. Pin the hotel on an offline map. Kaleiçi, the old town, is a morning walk, not a midnight parking puzzle: one-way alleys and limited spaces are a poor match for a tired driver and a large suitcase.

• Put the flight number on the booking and update it if you are rebooked
• Keep passport, licence and the driver's credit card in your cabin bag
• Photograph the car and write down fuel and mileage
• Keep the first night's drive short if you landed after 22:00

Returning the car: work backwards from the departure

Outbound security at AYT in summer is not a five-minute stroll. Plan fuel, the return bay and the desk time from the flight, not from optimism. If the fuel policy is full-to-full, look up stations near the airport the evening before; queues form when several groups return at once. The return parking level is printed on the agreement. Keep the key pack, any parking ticket and the folder together. Take the same walk-around photos you took at pick-up. If something happened on the trip, say so at the desk rather than leaving the car and hoping the photos will argue for you later.

One-way returns—leaving the car in a resort and flying from AYT, or the reverse—are explained in our one-way drop-off guide and depend on the fleet and the date. Ask when you book. Fees and availability change with season; this article will not invent a number. If your outbound flight moves, call before you drop the keys in a box. Early return and short extensions are contract matters, not a silent decision in the car park. Browse the vehicle list before you fly so the class you reserved still matches the bags you packed.

Which way out of AYT?

The airport sits on the eastern side of the Antalya urban area, close to the Aksu–Lara corridor. Eastbound traffic toward Belek, Side and Alanya stays on the coastal axis for most of the journey. Westbound traffic toward Konyaaltı and Kemer crosses or skirts the city. Mid-afternoon in July, the Lara–Kundu hotel strip slows. Water and a working air-conditioner matter more than a scenic detour on day one. Automatic cars disappear from summer inventory when people wait until landing day to decide. Book the class you need, not the class you hope will be left at the counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I collect a car after a night landing?

Many airport operations roster staff for late charters, but not every hour is covered in every season. Put the landing time on the reservation and ask for written confirmation if you arrive near a shift change. The meeting point at night may be a different door or a car-park island rather than the daytime desk.

Will someone wait if passport control is slow?

Flight tracking shows wheels-down, not the queue at immigration. If you have been standing more than a quarter of an hour, send a message. A name board only works if the person holding it knows you are still airside.

Do I have to refuel at the airport?

Only if that is what the fuel clause says. Full-to-full is the usual pattern. Do not leave the fill-up until you can already see the terminal roof; summer queues around AYT are real. Keep the receipt with the return papers.

Can a child seat be fitted at the airport?

Yes, if you reserved the correct weight group in advance. Ask the greeter to confirm the installation before you leave the bay, especially after a night arrival when you will not want to wrestle ISOFIX in a dark car park.

Airport hire at AYT is a sequence, not a mystery: documents, a calm walk-around, a realistic first drive and a return timed from the outbound flight. Share the flight number, do not heroically drive to Alanya at 01:00, and keep the D400 for when you are awake.
